5 Events You’d Be Crazy To Miss Out On This Summer

Running

Summer is finally here! And with so many events popping up, it’s hard to know what to look at next. Worry not, dear reader, here are some fun alternative ways to stay active this summer… Hand-picked by yours truly.

Summer Event No 1: Afterdark Invasion: Zombie Edition

Do you have plans for Halloween? If you do, cancel them. If you don’t, put this event on your calendar… because who doesn’t want to do an Obstacle Course Race. At night. While dodging zombies who are hungry for brains.

Yes, you heard right: this is what’s going down on the 27th October at D’vine Estate in Paarl. It’s your usual zombies versus humans, but with an OCR twist. Race 6km of treacherous terrain featuring manmade and natural obstacles. But be sure to look out for the zombies lingering in the shadows because they’re out to get you!

You’ll be carrying a flag belt and each flag represents a vital organ. You will only complete the race if you manage to cross the finish line with at least one of your vital organs (flags). Pick your side, whether it’s human or zombie. And be sure to stick around for the Afterparty.

Summer Event No 2: The African Centurion Robben Island Walk

It’s been said that you can only truly know someone by walking a mile in their shoes. Join this 100-mile (160km) walk and get to really know your fellow South Africans, as well as the man himself, Madiba. This year, Nelson Mandela would have been 100, and what better way to celebrate him than by taking part in the African Centurion.

The event takes place on Robben Island on the 20th and 21st October. The aim: to bring people together and to get to know one other by walking 100 miles. You will have 24 hours to complete this and can do so in teams or as a solo entry.
